CITI IRB Training
Certificate: No More Than Minimal Risk
The institutional review board (IRB) is an official committee that's sole purpose is to review, approve and monitor studies and behavioral research involving humans. The board must decide if the research will do mental or physical harm to the participants. In order to propose a study to the IRB board, one must take specific CITI trainings. One of the trainings I completed was the one involving minimal risk. Minimal risk is defined as "Risks to research subjects posed by participation in research should be justified by the anticipated benefits to the subjects or society."

CITI IRB Training
Certificate: Conflict of Interest Course
In addition to the mandatory CITI certifications, there were a few optional courses available to take. I participated in a few that interested me. Since I work at a local community college, I decided to enroll in the Conflict of Interest. This course outlined the different ways that a study can be comprised because of conflict in interests. It was really interesting and helped me to understand how to avoid conflict of interest in the future.

GREV 721 Qualitative Research Methods
Final Project: Methodology
While completing the final project, a case study on instructional gaming, we were expected to consider ethical considerations to guide our research. There are many current and ongoing issues in qualitative research. It is hard to juggle to goals of the program and the needs and rights of the participants. For example, some studies require participants to not know every aspect of the study in order to ensure honesty in results; however, how can a participant agree to participate in the study without knowing every details about the process? These are the issues that we had to keep in mind when creating our final projects (attached below).
